Environmental and Sustainability Research 2011.

Dr Mano Kalaiarasan completed his PhD in 2011 at SDE. He was awarded the World Future Foundation PhD Prize in Environmental and Sustainability Research.


Question 1 :

 

Why did you choose to do your research in SDE?

SDE has very reputable professors and the current research is moving in the direction of  sustainable built environments and is on par with international standards. Since I have a very ardent interest in this field and with SDE having very reputable professors, my obvious choice is SDE.


Question 2 :

What does winning the World Future Foundation PhD Prize in Environmental and Sustainability Research mean to you?
Winning this prestigious award means a sense of recognition for hardwork. It was a pleasant surprise and I would like to thank my supervisors, Associate Professor David Cheong Kok Wai and Associate Professor Tham Kwok Wai for their inspiration and support and making my study a success and recognized to the international community.


Question 3 :

Was there a moment in SDE, good or bad, which you will never forget?

I had many good moments in SDE. SDE was like a second home to me. My most unforgettable moment was when I did a presentation for my PhD qualifying examination. I had many unfavourable comments from the examiners and I was very downcast fearing my dream of achieving a PhD qualification was going to become null and void. With my wife’s strong support and encouragement, I decided to become assertive in my studies and today, I have become the winner of the prestigious WFF PhD Prize in Environmental and Sustainability Research.

What advice do you have for prospective students of SDE?

 

You have chosen the right path. The staff and professors in SDE are friendly and approachable. Hard work is the key to success. Make the most of it. The design of future Metropolis lies in your hands.
