The World Future Foundation (WFF) has contributed US$250,000 towards the continuation of Singapore’s first-of-its-kind award for excellence in doctoral-level (PhD) environmental and sustainability research at NTU. Five prizes – each worth US$10,000 – will be given out annually over the next five years to the top five completed PhD theses related to the environment, sustainability and metropolis of the future. The WFF, a Singapore-registered charity organisation devoted to advancing research and development of new environmental technologies, had offered the gift to the University following the success of the inaugural awards in 2010. This marks the second time that the WFF has given to the University; the first was in April 2010 when US$50,000 was given to NTU to set up the inaugural PhD prize.
